Llibertarianism is the most compatible of all political philosophies with the gospel of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. The degree of compatibility between libertarianism and the Church is my personal opinion. This blog does not speak for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints or any of its leaders including the First Presidency or the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles. Libertarianism is founded on the concept of liberty as the name itself implies. Freedom is the essential element to which libertarians subscribe. The gospel of Jesus Christ is based upon the concept of moral agency, which involves freedom of choice and the responsibility for the results or consequences of those choices. Libertarianism and the gospel both assert that all men and women are created equal, that all are free to choose between right and wrong, or between good and evil. Among the latter-day scriptures upon which The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints relies is a collection of revelations received by Joseph Smith and other latter-day prophets that is known as the Doctrine and Covenants. D & C Section 134 is a precise declaration of the church’s position on governments. It was adopted by a unanimous vote of the church in a general conference at Kirkland, Ohio, on August 17, 1835. This document establishes respect for government and law, preserves the right of conscience and worship, endorses private property and the right to its protection, and clearly sets forth the proper relationship of church and state.
For libertarians freedom and liberty embrace the social contract by which men, by the consent of the governed, choose to establish a government. For the gospel it is the plan of free agency by which God’s children come to this earth to receive a mortal body and learn to make the choices which will enable them to return to their Father in Heaven. It is freedom of choice in both politics and religion that enables progress. In fact, freedom is the ingredient that embodies the creation of wealth and has lifted mankind from poverty. And it is a discussion of that concept that enlivens this blog. No political system can fail if that basic system of freedom and liberty remains valid. And no religion can reject free agency and remain true. That is the premise of the Libertarian Latter=day Saint.
The libertarian view begins with private property. The seventeenth century philosopher John Locke set forth the enlightenment version of the creation of private property by positing that the first and most important property of all is one’s own body and that each man owns his own labor. Therefore, said Locke, what one improves from its natural state by mixing it with his own labor becomes his own property. Man is entitled to keep that property and defend it if necessary. Governments are established and endowed with the powers necessary to protect the life, liberty and property of men so that elements of trust, safety and social stability are preserved for everyone. These principles were set forth as the enabling principles of government by Thomas Jefferson in the Declaration of Independence. They were deemed sufficient for both the establishment of government; and for the dissolution of that government which failed to preserve those principles. Thomas Jefferson amended the concept of the ownership of property to include its necessary reason for existence which is the pursuit of happiness.
This was the essence of the enlightenment, or liberalism in the classic sense. Libertarianism is the modern version of classic liberalism and most closely resembles that of the founding fathers. In a social sense this is taken to mean live and let live. In the case of property and life it means “don’t take anyone’s stuff”, and “don’t hurt anyone”. Government actions beyond those considerations must be justified by the needs of society when they cannot be accomplished privately. Therefore, national defense is an extension of self defense and is justified to prevent harm on an international scale. Suffice it to say that the prevention of harm includes corporate or business harm in the form of unfair business practices and secondary harm, often called externalities, to the environment such as smoke stacks and pollution or to private property in an indirect manner as in blocking a stream that flows through another person’s property, etc. These are simple rules that if applied universally and proportionately will correctly address nearly all situations. Unfortunately, we all know how often such rules are violated or not followed. That is for another discussion.
