President Russell M. Nelson of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has designated the year 2020 for a bicentennial celebration of Joseph Smith’s first vision which ushered in the restoration of the fullness of the gospel of Jesus Christ. This vision was one of the few times in human history when God The Father has spoken to a man face to face as one man speaks to another. The young lad, Joseph Smith, had at the tender age of 14 sought the Lord in prayer desiring to know which of the many churches was the true church. Which of those who vied for converts in the area near his home of Palmyra, New York, was the right one. He wanted to know which one to join. God The Father pointed to the other figure in the vision and said, “This is my beloved Son, hear him.” Jesus then explained that none of the churches were true and that http://“they draw near to me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me, they teach for doctrines the commandments of men, having a form of godliness, but they deny the power thereof.” In honor of that vision and the words spoken by our Lord and Savior President Russell M. Nelson has asked us to consider those words and how they may be implemented in our own lives. Please view the following short video of that request.

I hope you will view both of these videos before reading on. I want to tell you now about a time when I listened to the Lord and it literally saved my life. As we are taught, the Holy Ghost is a revelator, a comforter, a companion, a teacher, and a protector. One day in my life I was protected by the Holy Ghost who warned me of danger. I was working as a guard on the Seattle waterfront during my studies at the University of Washington. I worked the night shift from 11PM to 7AM. During one such shift I was standing on the apron of Pier 37 watching the linemen tie an ocean going vessel to the dock. As the ship’s winch was drawing the lines tight I had an uneasy feeling and I wondered about those lines. I asked one of the linemen if the lines ever broke, and he laughed and said, “That’s a one inch steel cable.”, and walked off down the pier. But the feeling intensified and I began backing up. I backed up several feet when suddenly the line snapped and whipped through where I had been standing. It struck the warehouse on the dock and cut half way through the twelve by twelve inch wooden corner post of the building. Without a doubt that cable would have literally cut me in half. I have listened a number of times as faithful members of the Church have borne their testimonies of having been warned of danger by the Holy Ghost and how it had saved them. I had always believed those stories but now I truly understood them.
I testify in the name of my Savior, Jesus Christ, that the gift of the Holy Ghost will save your life too. Not always from physical danger. Sometimes He will save you from grave error, or comfort you in times of sorrow. I was once sitting in the Seattle temple chapel awaiting an endowment session. I was deep in sorrow for the loss of my 17 year old son when a pianist walked into the chapel and sat at the piano and without a word began playing “Did You Think To Pray” which is a hymn that had been, for me, like the balm of Gilead in the third verse. I have received great comfort from the words in that verse of the song. I felt it deeply then and knew that the pianist was following his own prompting for my benefit as I sat in such despair. I receive promptings and impressions continually as I study the scriptures or worship and pray. The Holy Ghost is my companion and I pray that He will be yours as well in the name of Jesus Christ, Amen.

My advice comes from a Joseph Smith revelation intended for his scribe, Oliver Cowdry. It concerned Oliver’s attempts to translate the gold plates which were unsuccessful. I will paraphrase it as follows, you must study it out in your mind by reading, studying, and pondering. When you do this the answer will come to you. However, that appears to be pretty much what you are doing now, only unsuccessfully. Why? Perhaps it is because you do not value the time that it takes to do that. Believe me, it is not time wasted. It is valuable time because it reflects the thought behind the writing. One cannot write what one cannot say. Therefore, consider how your thoughts might be might be expressed orally and then start writing. It’s work. Mental work. But it’s no less exhausting, albeit in a different manner, than physical labor. So don’t give up. Try it. You may be pleasantly surprised. All the best to you, Charlie Day
